Day 3 - Schurrenhof

Sunday 25th June 2017

It's a warm and bright morning as we head off from the High Chapparal. But we have a near disaster right at the outset when Mick stalls on a cold engine just as he is turning up a right-hand hairpin. There is nowhere for his foot to get down so the inevitable happens and down goes the GS.

These bikes are pretty tough and a combination of pot protector and pannier save the bike from any real damage. Mick is ok too, if a little embarrassed.
We have a broken right turn indicator which can be fixed with tape and a broken pannier lid lock which a couple of bungees take care of. The weirdest problem is that the ignition key is stuck in the lock, so for the rest of the tour the key stays in the lock. Who needs security?

Hotel Huberty
Our first port of call is just down the road in Kautenbach and the Hotel Huberty where Rudi and Birdy have looked after me and Mick a few times on previous trips.

It is Rudi's 60th birthday today so he is closed today but he recognises us and with his usual hospitality makes us a cup of coffee - on the house of course. Top man!

The ever hospitable Rudi

Happy Birthday Rudi.

Next it is back on the road for a bimble through the glorious back roads of northern Luxembourg. Even the meanest farm track is perfectly paved in this gem of a country.

Tricky hairpins and huge sweepers criss-cross the countryside. it a bikers' paradise.

Glorious Luxembourg roads
Much too soon we reach the River Our which forms the border with Germany. Once across into the Federal Republic we head for the autobahn and a fast run across the Moselle and the Rhine and into the German heartland.

Our original plan was a visit to see our old pal Charly Kaller in Heilbronn, but he is away from home so we continue on into Baden-Württemberg and Camping Schurrenhof near Schwabish-Gmund.

Camping Schurrenhof
I found this site on my way home from the Corsican bimble last year, alone as both Mick and Sean had succumbed to mechanical gremlins and headed home early.

It is a pleasant little site, cheap and cheerful. The on-site bar cafe is closed today, but there is a restaurant just across the road where we repair for pfefferling (wild mushrooms) on tagliatelli accompanied by a mixed salad and weissbier of course.

We are fast asleep by 10pm. Early starts and early nights are becoming the norm when camping. Live with the sun, sleep when it gets dark.

High on a hill - great tree!
